 Special Weather Statement

... Burst of heavy snow along with strong westerly winds possible
tonight...
... Moderate to heavy lake effect snow possible Wednesday through
Thursday morning...

A low pressure system moving across Upper Michigan this afternoon will
produce rain and snow showers later today. There may even be some
thunderstorms. Bursts of moderate to heavy snow are possible this
afternoon... mainly over Ontonagon County. Warm ground temperatures
should result in only minor snow accumulations... but poor visibilities
are possible in heavier snow showers.

A cold front will then cross the Keweenaw peninsula tonight. Strong
and gusty westerly winds are expected behind this front... with gusts
up to 45 mph possibly over the westerly facing slopes of the Keweenaw
peninsula. In addition... there is the potential for a period of
moderate to heavy snow with the wind tonight. Unlike the snowfall
today... several inches of snow accumulation may occur tonight. Sharply
reduced visibilities will also be possible due to the snow and
blowing snow. Stay tuned for later statements from the National
Weather Service in Marquette concerning the rapidly changing winter
weather situation through this evening.

As colder air moves over Lake Superior on Wednesday... expect lake
effect snow showers to intensify through the day over the westerly
wind favored snow belts. The snow could become heavy at times
Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night... especially over northern
Houghton County. Gusty westerly winds of 30 to 40 mph could lead to
blowing and drifting snow... along with reduced visibilities. The lake
effect snow is expected to diminish through the day on Thursday.
